{"id":829,"date":"2013-06-14T12:49:04","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T19:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/highergroundgardens.com\/?p=829"},"modified":"2013-06-14T12:49:04","modified_gmt":"2013-06-14T19:49:04","slug":"watering-restrictions-and-schedule-for-vancouver-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/highergroundgardens.com\/watering-restrictions-and-schedule-for-vancouver-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Watering restrictions and schedule for Vancouver 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know:\u00a0on the hottest summer\u00a0days, as much as two billion litres of water are used in Metro Vancouver!<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0These restrictions apply only to the use of treated drinking water.\u00a0<em>Using rain water, gray water, or any forms of recycled water are not restricted.<\/em> You can also buy a <a href=\"#kits\">water saving kit<\/a> from the City, for half off retail price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Residential lawn sprinkling restrictions:\u00a0<\/strong>1 June to 30 September<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Even-numbered addresses on Monday, Wednesday\u00a0and Saturday mornings 4:00am to 9:00am<\/li>\n<li>Odd-numbered addresses on Tuesday, Thursday,\u00a0and Sunday mornings, 4:00am to 9:00am<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New (unestablished) residential\u00a0and commercial lawns, trees, shrubs,\u00a0and flowers:\u00a0<\/strong>Sprinkling outside restricted times allowed only at the discretion of each municipality\u00a0and with <em>special permits<\/em> to be displayed on lawn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flowers\u00a0and vegetable gardens, decorative planters, shrubs\u00a0and trees<\/strong>: no restrictions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outdoor car washing\u00a0and boat washing<\/strong>:\u00a0Only with hose equipped with spring-loaded shut off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Currently we are at Stage 1 out of 4 for water shortage in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the watering restrictions<\/strong>, from the City of Vancouver website:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Why restrictions are needed in rainy Vancouver<\/h3>\n<p>While the Vancouver area gets a lot of rain, the Lower Mainland has\u00a0limited water storage capacity. Much of the rainfall and melted snow in the Capilano and Seymour watersheds cannot be collected for later use during dry\u00a0weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, this wasn&#8217;t a problem, but recent population growth in the Lower Mainland has led to increased demand for water. The Greater Vancouver Regional District has implemented sprinkling regulations to avoid more restrictive measures in case of drought.<\/p>\n<h3>What happens if you water outside of the permitted times<\/h3>\n<p>The City of Vancouver\u00a0recognizes that in some cases\u00a0the regulations may not provide your lawn with enough water. If you have a new lawn or you are using nematodes to treat your lawn for European Chafer Beetles, you can apply for a Lawn sprinkling permit.<\/p>\n<p>If you water your lawn\u00a0outside of designated times and do not have a permit, you could be fined $100. The City will be actively patrolling for violations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"content\"><a id=\"kits\"><\/a>Garden water conservation kits<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Start using water more efficiently in your yard.\u00a0The City of Vancouver\u00a0offers water saving kits that help you do your part for the environment, and prevent water shortages.<\/p>\n<h2>Outdoor water saving kit<\/h2>\n<p>If you have ever forgotten to shut-off a sprinkler or hose, you&#8217;ll appreciate the tools offered in this kit. Save up to 21 cubic meters of water per year.
